Build a Working Elevator Using Ropes and Pulleys
Gathering Materials and Planning
Elevators require ropes, pulleys, and anchors to function. Craft these components and decide on your elevator's height and width. A simple single-column elevator is easiest to start with.
Place an
anchor block at the top of where your elevator will reach. This serves as the pivot point for your
pulley system.
Constructing the Elevator Shaft
Attach a pulley to the anchor. Run
rope downward from the pulley to create the lift cable. Place a
platform or cart at the bottom—this is what you'll stand on. The rope connects the platform to the pulley system above.
Powering the Elevator
Connect your rope system to a mechanical power source: a windmill,
water wheel, or
axle network. When power flows through the pulley, it will wind or unwind the rope, raising or lowering your platform.
Testing and Adjusting
Start with low power settings to test movement. Ensure the rope is taut and the platform moves smoothly without binding. Once working, you can build multiple platforms or expand vertically for taller elevators.
