How to Use Better Third Person Mod: Free Camera Rotation and 8-Direction Movement

Understanding the two control layers

Better Third Person separates your camera direction from your movement direction. Normally in third person, moving the mouse turns both your body and the camera together. With this mod, the camera can orbit independently while your character keeps facing wherever you last aimed.

Basic steps

1. Switch to third person view using your usual toggle key (F5 by default).

2. Move your mouse to rotate the camera around your character. The camera now orbits freely instead of dragging your body with it.

3. Press a movement key. Your character walks in that direction relative to the camera, not relative to where the body is facing.

4. To re-align your body with the camera, simply attack, place a block, or break a block — the game snaps your character's facing to the camera direction using legal rotation packets.

Walking in 8 directions

Because movement is camera-relative, holding two keys at once (for example forward + left) produces diagonal movement without forcing your character to turn. This lets you strafe, backpedal, and circle-strafe while keeping the camera pointed at a target — useful for combat, building, and cinematic shots.

Tips

  • Combine slow camera pans with forward movement for smooth tracking shots.
  • If your character suddenly faces a new direction, that is the mod re-syncing your body to the camera after an action. It is expected behavior, not a bug.
