How to Fight and Build in Third Person Without Losing Camera Control

Why third person combat feels awkward normally

In vanilla third person, your body and camera are locked, so you cannot look at an enemy while backing away or strafing cleanly. Better Third Person fixes this by decoupling the two.

Combat workflow

1. Enter third person.

2. Point the camera at your target. Your character's body may still face another direction.

3. Move with WASD — movement is relative to the camera, so pressing back walks you away from the target while the camera stays on them.

4. When you are ready to strike, click attack. The mod rotates your character to face the camera direction using legal rotation, so the hit lands where you are looking.

This gives you a strafe-and-watch pattern: circle an enemy while keeping them centered on screen, then attack to snap your body toward them.

Building workflow

  • Aim the camera at the block face you want to place against.
  • Move to position yourself; your body orientation does not need to match the camera.
  • Place the block. Your character turns to the camera direction as the block is placed, so placement lands correctly.
  • The same applies to breaking blocks — aim, then break.

Tips

  • Because every action re-syncs your body to the camera, chain actions in the direction you want to face.
  • Use diagonal movement to strafe around corners while keeping the camera on a doorway or mob spawn.
