How to Fix Stuttering Caused by Particle-Heavy Mods (Effectual, Pretty Rain)
Identify the real cause
Stutter, not low average FPS, usually means the main thread is being blocked every tick by particle work. Mods like Effectual and Pretty Rain add many particles with complex motion, and vanilla ticks each one synchronously. Async Particles shifts ticking and buffer filling to background threads so the render thread is not waiting on them.
Steps
1. Confirm the stutter is particle-related: watch your frame time graph while standing still in a particle-heavy scene, then walk away from the particles. If the spikes stop, particles are the cause.
2. Make sure Async Particles is actually loading. Check your mod list in-game; if it is missing, another mod may be conflicting or the file may be in the wrong folder.
3. In the config, keep asynchronous particle ticking and asynchronous buffer filling enabled. These directly target tick-time spikes.
4. Enable async light caching. Particles that need light data force lookups; caching them asynchronously removes another main-thread cost.
5. Test with only Async Particles plus one particle mod at a time to isolate which mod benefits most.
If stutter persists
Stutter can also come from chunk loading, garbage collection, or shader compilation. Rule those out by testing in a flat world with no shaders. Async Particles only helps particle work, so it will not fix unrelated hitches.
