How to Place Blocks on the Sides and Bottoms of Other Blocks
Understanding the Core Mechanic
Additional Placements changes where blocks can attach. Instead of only placing a block on top of a solid surface, you can now place many blocks against the side faces and undersides of existing blocks. This is the mod's central feature, and it applies to blocks that already support directional placement in vanilla, such as stairs, slabs, torches, levers, buttons, and similar attachable blocks.
Step-by-Step
1. Hold the block you want to place in your hotbar.
2. Aim at the side face of an existing block rather than its top. The placement preview should snap to that face.
3. Right-click to place. The block will orient itself against the side you targeted.
4. To place underneath a block, aim at its bottom face from below and right-click.
5. If the block refuses to place, check that the target face is solid and that you are not aiming at a block that already occupies that space.
Practical Tips
- Combine side placement with sneaking to fine-tune which face you are targeting.
- This works especially well for attaching torches, signs, and buttons to walls in tight corridors where you previously had to break and rebuild.
- Experiment with stairs and slabs on vertical surfaces to create ledges and overhangs that vanilla would not allow.
