How to Use Ropes to Climb and Descend Safely

Placing and Climbing a Rope

Craft rope from string (the mod adds a rope item you can place like a ladder). Hold the rope and right-click the side of a block to anchor it, then keep right-clicking downward or upward to extend the strand. Once placed, walk into the rope and hold your jump key to ascend, or press your sneak key to slide down slowly. Unlike ladders, ropes do not require a solid block behind every segment, so you can hang a single strand down a cliff, cave shaft, or ravine.

Practical Tips

  • Anchor the top of the rope to a solid block so the whole strand stays attached.
  • You can descend faster than you climb; sneaking controls your fall so you do not take damage.
  • Break the bottom segment to retract the rope and recover it instead of leaving litter in your world.
  • Combine ropes with a scoped crossbow: climb to a high vantage, then pick off mobs from range.

Ropes are the cheapest early-game alternative to ladders and are ideal for mining shafts, since you can drop one down a deep hole and climb back out without carving stairs.
