How to Use Ropes for Climbing and Descending

Crafting Ropes

Ropes are one of the mod's signature movement tools. Craft them using string arranged in a vertical pattern on a crafting table. The exact yield depends on how much string you invest, but a single craft gives you a usable length of rope to place in the world.

Placing and Climbing

Place a rope against a wall or from a high ledge by right-clicking. Once placed, the rope hangs downward and can be climbed by walking into it. Hold the forward key while facing the rope to ascend, and hold back or sneak to descend in a controlled manner. This makes ropes ideal for scaling cliffs, descending into ravines, or getting out of caves without building a staircase.

Ropes can also be used to lower yourself safely into areas where fall damage would otherwise be a problem, since climbing slows your descent. They work well alongside ladders but are more flexible because they can hang freely rather than needing a solid backing block.

Practical Uses

  • Bring a stack of string on mining trips so you can craft ropes on the fly.
  • Use ropes to mark your path down into caves so you can climb back out easily.
  • Combine with the Wrench to reposition rope anchor points without breaking them.
