Voxray Shaders FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I turn on Voxray Shaders after installing it?
Launch Minecraft with Iris installed, go to Options > Video Settings > Shader Packs, and select Voxray Shaders from the list. The shader will activate immediately, though you may need to adjust settings for your hardware.
What's the difference between raymarching and raytracing in this shader?
Raytracing calculates shadows by tracing rays from the light source through the voxelized world, while raymarching steps through the voxel grid to create volumetric lighting effects in the air. Together they produce the deep shadows and atmospheric lighting Voxray is known for.
Why is my game running slowly with Voxray Shaders enabled?
Voxray is computationally expensive because it converts your world into voxels and performs raytracing calculations every frame. Try lowering shadow distance, reducing volumetric lighting quality, or disabling advanced effects in the shader settings to improve performance.
Can I use Voxray Shaders with other mods?
Voxray works with most mods, but may have compatibility issues with mods that heavily modify rendering or lighting. Test with your mod list and check for visual glitches; if problems occur, try disabling conflicting mods one at a time.
What does 'packing voxels into shadowmaps' actually do?
Instead of using traditional shadow calculations, Voxray stores the 3D block structure of your world in a shadowmap texture, allowing the shader to quickly look up whether a block exists at any position during raytracing. This enables accurate shadows and volumetric effects.
Why do some blocks look weird or have strange lighting?
Voxray's voxelization can cause artifacts on transparent blocks, half-blocks, or custom shapes that don't fit the standard cube model. Adjust transparency settings in the shader options or check the troubleshooting guide for specific block types.
How do I get the best-looking volumetric lighting effects?
Increase volumetric lighting quality and shadow distance in the shader settings, and position yourself where sunlight or bright light sources can shine through open air or fog. Time of day and weather also affect how visible these effects are.
Does Voxray Shaders work in caves and underground?
Yes, but volumetric lighting effects are less visible underground since there's less open air for light to travel through. You'll still see accurate block shadows and lighting on surfaces, especially near torches or other light sources.
What GPU do I need to run Voxray Shaders smoothly?
Voxray is demanding and benefits from a dedicated graphics card with good compute performance; integrated graphics will struggle. Start with lower quality settings and gradually increase them to find what your hardware can handle.
Can I customize which effects Voxray uses?
Yes, the shader includes toggles and sliders for volumetric lighting intensity, shadow quality, raymarching distance, and other effects. Open the shader options menu to enable, disable, or fine-tune individual features to match your preference and performance needs.
