Void Totem — Guide

What Happens When It Triggers

The totem activates at the moment the void would otherwise kill you. Four things happen at once:

  • The totem is consumed. One totem is spent per rescue, exactly like the ordinary Totem of Undying.
  • You are moved to safety. The game returns you to the last solid block you were standing on. If it cannot place you there, it sets you down high in the sky instead, at a height you control, so you have room to react rather than reappearing inside terrain.
  • You are healed and shielded. You come back with Regeneration and Absorption, the same effects the vanilla totem grants.
  • The landing is free. The fall that follows the rescue does not hurt you, so being placed high in the air is not a second death sentence.

A sound plays, particles burst around you, and the totem sweeps across the screen the way the vanilla one does, so the rescue is unmistakable.

Finding One

The Totem of Void Undying is treasure loot: it is found in the chests of End Cities.

That placement is deliberate. The End is where the void is closest and most dangerous — the outer islands are separated by open drops, the main island has an edge on every side, and being knocked off by a shulker or an enderman is a routine hazard. The totem is found in the place where you are most likely to need it.

In creative it sits in the Combat tab, directly beside the ordinary Totem of Undying.

Carrying It

By default the totem has to be held, in either hand, exactly like the vanilla Totem of Undying. Holding it costs you a hand slot, which is the trade the vanilla item asks for too.

If you would rather not give up a hand, one setting changes that: with Use From Inventory turned on, a totem anywhere in your inventory will be used. This is more forgiving than the vanilla rules, so it is off by default and left to you to choose.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the ordinary Totem of Undying already do this? No. Void damage is written to pass straight through the protection the vanilla totem offers, so holding one changes nothing when you fall out of the world. That gap is the reason this item exists.

Do I keep my items? Yes. You never die, so nothing is dropped and nothing is destroyed.

Can I still die in the void? Yes — if you are not carrying a totem, or the dimension is on the blocklist, the void behaves exactly as it always has.

Does it work for mobs as well as players? The rescue is written against living entities generally, so a mob holding one is covered by the same rules.

Is it craftable? No. It is treasure loot, found in End City chests.
