VarianceFog Shaders FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I turn on VarianceFog Shaders?
VarianceFog Shaders activates automatically once installed. If you don't see fog, check that shaders are enabled in your video settings and that the mod is present in your mods folder.
Why can't I see very far even with high render distance?
The thick fog is the main feature of this mod—it intentionally limits your view distance to create tension and a spooky atmosphere. This is working as intended and cannot be disabled without removing the mod.
Do torches actually push back the fog?
Yes, holding a torch in your hand or placing torches, lanterns, and campfires nearby will clear and push back the fog in that area, creating a safe circle of visibility around the light source.
What light sources work best for clearing fog?
Torches, lanterns, and campfires are the most effective. Glowing blocks like glowstone also push back fog, though handheld torches give you the most control while exploring.
Is VarianceFog Shaders laggy on older computers?
No, this mod is designed to run fast even on basic computers with low GPU requirements. If you're experiencing lag, the issue is likely caused by something else in your setup.
Does the fog appear during the day?
Yes, the fog blankets all biomes at all times, though it creates a more spooky and oppressive feeling at night and in dark caves where light sources matter most.
Can I use this mod with other shader packs?
VarianceFog Shaders is a shader-based mod, so it may conflict with other shader packs. You should use one or the other, not both simultaneously.
How do I survive caves with this mod?
Bring multiple torches or lanterns to light your way and push back fog as you explore. Place torches along your path to mark the way back and maintain visibility in tight tunnels.
Does the fog affect my ability to find resources?
Yes, the reduced visibility makes mining and resource gathering more challenging. Use torches and glowing blocks strategically around your mining areas to improve visibility.
Will this mod work with my multiplayer server?
VarianceFog Shaders is a client-side mod, so it only affects your own view. Other players won't see the fog unless they also have the mod installed.
