Tan's Huge Trees Mod — Guide

Tree Species

The mod adds a vast array of tree species, each designed with specific themes and spawning conditions. Most species feature 10-20 different shapes to provide variety.

Primary Species

Species Biome Description
Great Oak Forests, Plains Massive, branching oak trees with thick trunks and sprawling canopies.
Huge Spruce Taiga, Snowy Taiga Extremely tall, conical evergreens that dominate the skyline.
Huge Birch Birch Forests Tall, slender trees with white bark and dense leaf clusters.
Huge Jungle Jungles Colossal trees covered in vines with massive canopies that block out the sun.
Huge Dark Oak Dark Forests Thick, gnarled trees that create a dense, shadowy roof over the forest floor.
Huge Acacia Savanna Wide, flat-topped trees designed for the open plains of the savanna.
Huge Mangrove Swamps Complex root systems that extend into the water, creating realistic swamp environments.
Huge Cherry Cherry Groves Large, pink-leaved trees that create a vibrant, fantasy atmosphere.

Rare & Unique Species

  • Empyrean Tree (Redwood): Found in Old Growth Pine Taiga; these are the tallest trees in the mod.
  • Kronos Tree (Guard Tree): A massive, ancient-looking tree with a unique protective aesthetic.
  • Monolith Tree: A rare, stone-like tree structure found in Desert biomes.
  • Helios (Tree of Sun): A giant, radiant tree that serves as a landmark in bright biomes.
  • Tree of Wisdom: A rare, mystical tree found occasionally in Plains biomes.
  • Karma: A high-tier fantasy tree introduced in later versions (1.8.0+).
  • Apple Trees: Decorative trees found in Pasture fields that can drop apples.
  • Palm Trees: Specifically designed to spawn near water (Waterside type) in tropical biomes.

Mechanics

Living Tree Mechanics

Trees in this mod are not static blocks; they have a "Living" status. * Decay: If a tree's leaves are entirely removed or its "core" (the junction between roots and trunk) is destroyed, the tree will transition into a "Dead Tree" state. * Dormancy: Trees can enter a dormant state (e.g., during winter if using Serene Seasons) to prevent them from dying when leaves naturally disappear.

Generation System

THT uses a "Region Pre-Location" system. When a new region is loaded, the mod pre-calculates tree positions. This prevents the lag associated with standard structure generation and allows for trees that span multiple chunks.

Spawn Types: * Normal: Standard land generation. * Waterside: Spawns specifically near water blocks (e.g., Palm trees). * Landside: Spawns on the edge of land looking toward water. * Shoreline: Spawns directly on the coast.

Customization: The Pack System

The mod is highly customizable through its own pack system, located in the config/tanshugetrees/custom_packs folder.

  • Structure: Users can create folders or ZIP files containing JSON definitions for tree shapes, species, and spawning rules.
  • Main Pack: The mod requires the "TannyJung's Main Pack" (often renamed to #main), which contains the default tree data. This pack can be updated automatically via the internet to provide new tree shapes without updating the mod JAR.
  • Commands:
  • /TANSHUGETREES restart: Reloads all custom packs and configurations.
  • /TANSHUGETREES summon_tree <path>: Manually spawns a tree from a specific pack (e.g., #main/redwood).
  • /TANSHUGETREES config repair: Fixes common configuration errors automatically.

Nature Structures

Beyond living trees, the mod generates various natural elements to make the world feel more lived-in and detailed.

  • Coarse Woody Debris: Fallen logs and decaying wood found on the forest floor.
  • Dead Trees: Trees can generate in various states of decay, including hollow trunks, twigless skeletons, or completely fallen logs.
  • Stumps & Roots: Detailed ground-level structures that connect trees to the terrain.
  • Bushes & Rocks: Small decorative features that fill the gaps between massive trees.
  • Leaf Litter: Custom ground cover that simulates fallen leaves (available as a TXT function in custom packs).

Items & Tools

While the mod primarily uses vanilla blocks to ensure compatibility, it adds several specialized items for interaction and creative use.

Tree Generator

The Tree Generator is the core tool for manual tree placement. It is a block/item used to spawn specific tree species instantly. In creative mode, it allows players to test custom shapes and pack settings.

Tree Summoner Staff

A "just for fun" item that allows players to summon trees at a distance.

Custom Saplings

The mod includes built-in saplings for survival mode. These can be planted like vanilla saplings but will grow into the massive versions defined by the mod's generation system.

Item Acquisition Use
Tree Generator Creative Menu / Commands Spawns a tree structure at the target location.
Tree Summoner Staff Crafting / Creative Ranged tree spawning.
Species Saplings Sapling Trader / Exploration Survival-friendly way to grow huge trees.

Mobs: The Sapling Trader

The Sapling Trader is a unique entity that provides access to the mod's custom saplings in survival mode.

  • Summoning: To summon the Sapling Trader, place Flowering Azalea Leaves into a Campfire.
  • Behavior: He acts as a specialized wandering trader, offering blueprints and saplings for various huge tree species in exchange for emeralds or other nature-related items.
  • Customization: The trader's trades and appearance can be modified via the Custom Pack system.
