How to Get Your First Flint Tools

Find Loose Rocks and Flint Shards

You cannot punch wood into planks, so your first tools come from the ground. Search the surface for Stone Loose Rock, Andesite Loose Rock, Diorite Loose Rock, Granite Loose Rock, Sandstone Loose Rock, and Red Sandstone Loose Rock. Break these loose rocks to collect them. While gathering, also pick up Plant Fiber from grass and Flint Shard from gravel.

Craft Flint Tools

Combine Flint Shard with Plant Fiber or sticks to assemble your starting kit:

• Flint Knife — cuts Plant Fiber into Plant String and processes other soft materials.
• Flint Axe — chops wood once you have a tool to do it.
• Flint Pickaxe — mines stone so you can gather Andesite Cobblestone, Diorite Cobblestone, and Granite Cobblestone.
• Flint Shovel — digs dirt, sand, and gravel faster.
• Flint Hoe — tills soil for farming.

Make a Fire Starter

Craft a Fire Starter so you can light campfires and furnaces. Use it on a campfire to cook food with the campfire_cooking recipes, and on a furnace once you have one built from cobblestone.

Upgrade Path

Once you have a Flint Pickaxe, mine stone to collect the three cobblestone variants. Smelt ore in a furnace to get Iron and craft Iron Knife, Iron Mattock, and Iron Saw. The Mattock combines axe and hoe functions, and the Saw handles wood cutting more efficiently than a knife. Keep your Flint Knife until you can replace it, since it is the only tool that turns Plant Fiber into Plant String early on.
