How to Get Stone Tools and Cobblestone Variants

From Flint to Stone

Craft a Flint Pickaxe from Flint Shards, then mine stone. Stone drops as loose rock variants: Stone Loose Rock, Andesite Loose Rock, Diorite Loose Rock, Granite Loose Rock, Sandstone Loose Rock, and Red Sandstone Loose Rock. Each loose rock is a distinct item and feeds different recipes.

Cobblestone Blocks

Combine loose rocks to produce cobblestone blocks: Andesite Cobblestone, Diorite Cobblestone, and Granite Cobblestone. These are full blocks with slab, stair, and wall variants — Andesite Cobblestone Slab, Andesite Cobblestone Stairs, Andesite Cobblestone Wall, and the same for Diorite and Granite. Use a stonecutter for the slab, stair, and wall recipes; stonecutting is the intended path for these shapes.

Stone Tools

Stone-tier tools use cobblestone in place of flint. The Flint Pickaxe is your mining tool until you can craft stone equivalents. Stone tools mine faster and last longer, and they are required before you can reasonably pursue iron.

Building with Cobblestone

The cobblestone variants are decorative and structural. Walls, stairs, and slabs let you build defensible bases without wasting full blocks. Mix Andesite, Diorite, and Granite cobblestone for texture variation. All three accept the same slab/stair/wall treatment, so plan your palette before you commit blocks.
