How to Get Flint Shards and Your First Flint Tools

Getting Flint Shards

Break gravel blocks by hand until Flint Shard drops. You need these before any proper tool exists. Once you have a few Flint Shards, combine them in a crafting grid to produce the basic flint tool set: Flint Axe, Flint Pickaxe, Flint Shovel, Flint Hoe, and Flint Knife. Each flint tool consumes Flint Shards in a shaped recipe, so gather more than one stack of gravel before you start.

Why Each Tool Matters

The Flint Axe lets you chop wood, which is the gate to planks, sticks, and everything wooden. The Flint Pickaxe mines stone and the loose rock variants. The Flint Shovel moves dirt, sand, and gravel faster. The Flint Hoe turns dirt and grass into farmland. The Flint Knife is the cutting tool: it processes Plant Fiber into Plant String and handles other cutting recipes you will need for binding.

Progression Note

Flint tools are stepping stones, not endpoints. Once you have a Flint Pickaxe, mine stone to reach Stone Loose Rock, Andesite Loose Rock, Diorite Loose Rock, and Granite Loose Rock. Those loose rocks feed into cobblestone variants and eventually into better tools. Keep a Flint Knife in your inventory at all times — many later recipes assume you have a cutting tool on hand.
