No Light No Color! Shaders FAQ

10 questions players actually ask, answered.

Why is everything black and white in my world?
The shader drains color based on light level—dark areas lose saturation until they're completely grayscale. This is the core mechanic of the mod. Place torches, glowstone, or other light sources nearby to restore colors in that area.
How do I see colors again after the sun sets?
You need to create artificial light sources like torches, lanterns, or campfires around you. The shader restores color only where light reaches, so carrying torches or building lit pathways lets you see normally.
Does this shader work in the Nether and End?
Yes, but the Nether's natural lava light keeps most areas colored, while the End's darkness makes it almost completely black and white unless you bring light sources. Both dimensions become much more challenging with this shader.
Can I adjust how fast colors fade or how dark it gets?
Shader settings vary depending on which version you're using—check your shader options menu in-game (usually accessible from Video Settings). Some versions allow you to tweak the desaturation rate or minimum brightness.
Will this shader lag my game?
No Light No Color! Shaders is relatively lightweight compared to other shader packs, but performance depends on your GPU and render distance. Lower your render distance or graphics settings if you experience frame drops.
Does this work with other shader packs at the same time?
No—you can only use one shader pack at a time in Minecraft. You'll need to choose between this shader and any other shaders you want to use.
Why can't I see mobs in dark caves?
Mobs are affected by the desaturation just like blocks, making them nearly invisible in pitch-black areas. Use torches to light up caves so you can spot hostile mobs before they spot you.
Does the shader affect my ability to find ores?
Yes—ore colors fade in dark areas, making them harder to spot. You'll need good lighting to mine efficiently, which adds to the survival challenge and encourages strategic torch placement.
Can I use this shader on multiplayer servers?
Yes, shaders are client-side and don't require server permission. However, other players won't see the shader effects—it only changes how the game looks on your computer.
What's the best way to explore caves with this shader?
Bring stacks of torches and place them frequently along your path so you can find your way back and maintain visibility. Consider building a lit tunnel system or using glowstone markers to create safe routes through dark areas.
