Minecraft SSR Shaders FAQ

10 questions players actually ask, answered.

How do I turn on reflections after installing the shader?
Load into a world with the shader active, then open the shader options menu (usually Shift + O in OptiFine or through Iris settings). Look for Screen-Space Reflections or SSR settings and enable them. You should see water start reflecting the sky and nearby terrain immediately.
Why do my reflections look broken or cut off?
Screen-space reflections only show what's currently visible on your screen—objects outside your view won't reflect. If reflections seem incomplete, try increasing your render distance or adjusting the reflection distance setting in shader options to capture more of the scene.
Does this work with OptiFine and Iris or just one?
The shader works with both OptiFine and Iris. You can use whichever shader loader you prefer; the reflection quality and behavior will be similar on both.
My FPS dropped a lot after enabling SSR. How do I fix it?
Screen-space reflections are performance-intensive. Try lowering the reflection quality or distance in shader settings, reducing render distance, or disabling reflections on distant water. Check the performance optimization guide for more detailed tuning options.
Can I see reflections of mobs and players in the water?
SSR reflections show static terrain, blocks, and the sky, but moving entities like mobs and players typically don't reflect due to how screen-space reflections work. Only the landscape and structures will appear in the water's mirror surface.
Do reflections work in the Nether or End?
Reflections work on any water surface, including in the Nether and End. However, the visual effect depends on what's above the water—the Nether's ceiling and the End's void will reflect accordingly.
Why do reflections flicker or shimmer when I move?
Flickering usually happens when reflection quality is set too low or when your camera moves quickly. Try increasing the reflection quality setting or enabling temporal filtering if available in your shader options.
Does this shader change how water looks besides reflections?
No—the shader only adds reflections to water surfaces. Water transparency, color, and wave behavior remain unchanged from vanilla Minecraft.
Can I disable reflections just for certain water bodies?
The shader applies reflections globally to all water. You can't selectively disable reflections for specific lakes or rivers, but you can lower the overall reflection intensity or distance in settings.
Do I need a high-end GPU for this to run well?
SSR Shaders are demanding but can run on mid-range hardware if you lower quality settings and render distance. Start with lower reflection quality and adjust upward until you find a balance between visuals and performance.
