How to Make Steel in Mekanism

The Metallurgic Infuser Route

Steel in Mekanism comes from the Metallurgic Infuser, not a vanilla furnace. You need two ingredients: Iron and a source of Carbon. Carbon is produced by infusing Coal into the machine, or by using Charcoal. Place the Metallurgic Infuser, give it power from a Basic Energy Cube through a Basic Universal Cable, then insert Coal into the infusion slot and Iron into the input slot. The machine outputs Steel Ingot.

If you want a denser carbon source, craft a Block of Charcoal or use Charcoal Dust from a Crusher or Enriching Factory to feed the infuser more efficiently.

Scaling Steel Production

A single Metallurgic Infuser is slow. Build an Infusing Factory — Basic Infusing Factory first, then upgrade with a Basic Tier Installer to Advanced Infusing Factory — to process multiple Iron at once. Feed it Coal or Charcoal continuously and pipe Steel out with a Basic Logistical Transporter into a Basic Bin so it accumulates while you work elsewhere.

What Steel Unlocks

Steel Ingots craft into Block of Steel, and they are required for many mid-tier Mekanism machines and components. Once you have a steady Steel supply, you can build Advanced Control Circuit components and upgrade your factories. Keep a Basic Bin or Advanced Bin next to your Infusing Factory so you never run out mid-craft.
