How to Get Steel with the Blast Furnace and Coke Oven

Make Coal Coke First

Steel needs two inputs: iron and coal coke. Build a Coke Oven and feed it coal. It outputs Coal Coke plus Creosote Oil as a byproduct. Creosote Oil is stored in a Bucket of Creosote Oil and is used later for treating wood and in the Blast Furnace Preheater. Keep a steady supply of Coal Coke before you build the furnace.

Run the Blast Furnace

Build the Blast Furnace from Blast Brick and Blast Brick Slab. Place iron ore or iron ingots in the top and Coal Coke in the lower slot. The furnace produces Steel. Add a Blast Furnace Preheater to the side and feed it Creosote Oil to speed up smelting. Output comes out as Block of Steel when compressed, or as Steel ingots for crafting.

Use the Steel

Steel feeds most advanced machines and structures. Craft Steel into Block of Steel for storage, or use ingots directly in recipes for the Arc Furnace, Assembler, Automated Engineer's Workbench, and the various Sheetmetal blocks. Steel is also the base for many tools and the Revolver assembly line. Once your Coke Oven and Blast Furnace are running continuously, steel stops being a bottleneck.
