Tschipcraft'S Dynamic Lights Vs. Lambdynamiclights & Others

TL;DR

For heavily modded setups, client-side modpacks and for playing on external servers, I highly recommend choosing LambDynamicLights or similar client-side mods.
For casual vanilla+ server owners, realm players and experimentalists give Tschipcraft's Dynamic Lights a try :)

LambDynamicLights Tschipcraft's Dynamic Lights
Works on Fabric, Quilt (Unofficial (Neo)Forge ports are available but may not be up-to-date)1 Vanilla (yes, even on Realms), Fabric, Quilt, NeoForge, Forge, Bukkit, Spigot, Paper2, any forks of Paper2 and any combination in between as long as it supports data packs
Side Client-side3 Server-side3
Technique Rendering changes, for more details check out this wiki page Vanilla Light Block4
Mod compatibility Might cause some issues with other rendering changing mods, but generally good support out of the box No rendering changes, issues will relate to block updates/properties (e.g. #17)
Mod support Yes, amazing mod support with the ability to deduce item light levels from their block counterpart on the fly No, some mods might get hardcoded support in the future, see #38
Curios/Trinkets support Yes, for other mods check out Radiant Gear Curios is supported, Trinkets might come in the future
Smooth blending between blocks Yes No, restricted to the block grid due to using the light block
Performance Good, actual impact depends on the client Could be better, on a vanilla server setup 1 tick takes around 2-3ms more (1 tick has to finish in 50ms for 20 TPS)

1: The ports (or multiloader forks) I've found so far are: RyoamicLights (Multiloader), Sodium/Embeddium Dynamic Lights (Multiloader), LambDynamicLights [Unofficial NeoForge] (NeoForge only), DynamicLightsReforged (Forge)

Honorable mentions of client-side mods that are not affiliated with LambDynamicLights: Lucent, Chloride

Comparable to server-side: Atomicstrykergrumpy's Dynamic Lights

2: There have been minor problems with Paper in the past, see #45. Please report any issues.

3: Client-side vs. Server-side?

Client-side

  • Each player needs to install the mod.
  • Works on any server, even if the server doesn't have the mod.
  • Other players won't see your lights unless they have the mod too.

Server-side:

  • Only the server needs to have the mod installed.
  • Works for all players who join the server, even if they don't have the mod themselves.
  • If a server doesn't have the mod, it won't work - even if you have it installed on your game.

What about singleplayer or LAN worlds?

When you play singleplayer or host a world for friends (like over LAN or with mods like e4mc), your game acts as the server. So if you have Tschipcraft's Dynamic Lights installed, everyone who joins will automatically see the effects.

4: Vanilla Light Block Technique:

In Minecraft 1.17, the light block has been added to the game. Tschipcraft's Dynamic Lights places it in appropriate locations in your world to simulate dynamic lights.
Unfortunately, even though the block looks like air, in some cases it behaves like bedrock. It will block pistons and explosion damage if placed unluckily. Tschipcraft's Dynamic Lights has some checks in place to prevent this, but they are not exhaustive and may miss special cases, as each additional check degrades performance.

If you encounter issues, please report them, I try to prevent common cases.
