Data Tip Mod FAQ

10 questions players actually ask, answered.

Where do I put my JSON files for tooltips?
Create a folder path `assets/ /datatip/` inside your resource pack, then place your `datatip.json` file there. The namespace can be any name you choose—it doesn't have to match a mod ID.
How do I match an item in my tooltip definition?
Use the `match` field with an exact item ID like `minecraft:diamond_sword`, an item tag like `#minecraft:planks`, or a wildcard pattern like `minecraft:*_ore` to match multiple items at once.
Can I show different tooltip text based on the player's location or status?
Yes, use the `conditions` field to check biome, dimension, weather, hunger level, NBT data, and more—tooltip lines only display when all their conditions are met.
How do I display a 3D model or block preview inside a tooltip?
Add a `model` component to your tooltip definition and specify the model path; you can rotate it and customize its size and position within the hover box.
What live values can I show, like durability or coordinates?
You can display item durability, player health, hunger, coordinates, world time, biome name, dimension, and other NBT-based values using data binding syntax in your tooltip text.
Why aren't my changes showing up after I edit the JSON?
Press F3 + T or run `/reload` in-game to refresh your resource packs and reload all tooltip definitions instantly.
How do I hide extra tooltip details until the player presses Shift?
Add a `hidden` field set to `true` on any tooltip line or component; it will only appear when the player holds the assigned keybind (Left Shift by default).
Can I add progress bars or data charts to tooltips?
Yes, use the `progressbar` component for durability or custom values, or add `chart` components to display bar, pie, or line graphs of your data.
Does this mod work with other tooltip mods or data-display mods?
Data Tip Mod is designed to work alongside most mods, but if another mod also modifies item tooltips, test both together to ensure they don't conflict or overlap visually.
Can I use custom fonts or text formatting in my tooltips?
Yes, you can set custom colors using ARGB values, apply bold and italic styles, use custom fonts from your resource pack, and control line spacing and positioning with offset values.
