How to Set Up a Wired or Wireless Network with Modems

Choosing and Placing a Modem

A Wired Modem attaches to a Computer, Advanced Computer, Turtle, or Advanced Turtle and lets it talk over Networking Cable. A Wireless Modem does the same but sends signals through the air to other Wireless Modems and Ender Modems. An Ender Modem is a block that also carries wireless traffic, so you can place one where you want a fixed relay point. Craft the modem you need, then place it against the side of the computer or turtle you want to connect.

Running Cable and Linking Devices

Run Networking Cable from a Wired Modem to another Wired Modem. Cable connects block to block, so keep the run continuous and end it on a modem attached to the second machine. For wireless, place a Wireless Modem on each machine and an Ender Modem anywhere in range. On each computer, open the Lua prompt and wrap the modem peripheral to get a handle on it. Use that handle to open a channel and send or receive messages. Give each device its own channel number so traffic does not collide. If a machine cannot see the modem, break and replace the modem on the correct face, then re-wrap the peripheral. Once two machines share a channel, one can send a message and the other can receive it, which is the basis for remote control, chat links, and turtle commands.
