Caves & Canyons Data Pack FAQ

10 questions players actually ask, answered.

Do I need to start a new world to use this data pack?
Yes, you should start a new world for the data pack to generate caves and canyons properly. If you apply it to an existing world, only newly explored chunks will have the modified generation—your old chunks will keep their original caves.
How do I find a rift valley?
Rift valleys generate naturally as you explore, appearing as massive canyon-like structures that cut deep into the earth. They're most noticeable near the surface where they create dramatic vertical drops, and they extend down to very deep levels.
Can I adjust how big the caves are?
Yes, the data pack includes customizable settings for cave size and shape—you can modify noodle caves, spaghetti caves, and other cave types to your preference. Any changes you make only affect new chunks you explore, leaving already-generated areas unchanged.
What's different about mineshafts in this pack?
Mineshafts now spawn on dry land with a spiral stone staircase and wooden supports, making them accessible and walkable instead of buried underground. This gives you a clear entry point to descend into the mineshaft structure.
Why are my old cave entrances still messy after installing the pack?
The pack only affects newly generated chunks—previously explored areas keep their original cave generation. You'll see cleaner surfaces with smaller cave entrances only in new terrain you haven't visited yet.
What is the underground world option and should I enable it?
The underground world option is an experimental feature that creates a massive, nearly endless deep underground space when enabled. It's optional and designed for players who want extreme vertical exploration, so enable it only if you want that kind of world.
Do caves get bigger the deeper I go?
Yes, cave systems expand and open up into larger caverns as you travel deeper underground, creating massive spaces perfect for extended mining expeditions.
Will this data pack cause lag or performance issues?
The data pack modifies world generation rather than adding constant block updates, so performance impact is minimal. However, rendering massive caverns and rift valleys may affect frame rates on lower-end systems when you're in those areas.
Can I use this with other mods or data packs?
Caves & Canyons should work with most mods, but conflicts can occur if other data packs also modify cave or terrain generation. Test compatibility by enabling them together in a test world first.
How do I undo my cave customization settings?
Reset your settings to their defaults through the data pack's configuration options, then explore new chunks to see the default cave generation. Your previously generated chunks will remain unchanged regardless of setting adjustments.
