BungeeCord Minecraft Server Software FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I connect my backend servers to BungeeCord?
Add each backend server's IP address and port to the config.yml file under the 'servers' section, then set those servers to offline mode and restart BungeeCord. Make sure your backend servers are behind a firewall and only accessible from the BungeeCord proxy.
Why do players see a disconnect when moving between servers?
IP forwarding is not enabled on all your servers. Turn on 'ip_forward: true' in BungeeCord's config and add 'bungeecord: true' to the spigot.yml file on every backend server, then restart everything.
Can I run BungeeCord on the same machine as my game servers?
Yes, but use different ports for each service so they don't conflict. BungeeCord typically uses port 25565 and your backend servers use ports like 25566, 25567, etc.
How much RAM does BungeeCord need?
BungeeCord uses very little memory because it only routes packets and doesn't load worlds or entities. Most networks run it comfortably on 256-512 MB allocated, though larger networks with thousands of players may need more.
What happens if a backend server goes offline?
Players currently on that server will disconnect, but BungeeCord itself stays online and other servers remain accessible. You can set a fallback server in the config so disconnected players are sent somewhere else automatically.
How do I send a message to all players across all servers?
Use the /alert command from the BungeeCord console: /alert . This broadcasts to every player on every connected backend server instantly.
Can players use the same account on multiple backend servers at once?
No, a player can only be logged in once across the entire network. If they join a different backend server, they're moved there and their old connection closes.
Why are players getting kicked for 'too many login attempts'?
Enable connection throttling in BungeeCord's config to prevent join spam and rapid reconnections. This stops malicious bots from flooding your network with connection requests.
Do I need to run BungeeCord in online mode or offline mode?
Run BungeeCord in online mode so it authenticates players with Mojang's servers, then set all backend servers to offline mode and enable IP forwarding so they trust BungeeCord's player data.
How do I check which server a player is on?
Use /find from the BungeeCord console to see which backend server they're currently connected to, or use /glist to see all online players grouped by server.
