Choosing the Right Performance Profile for Your Computer

Identify Your Hardware

Before launching Minecraft, assess your machine's capabilities. Potato and low profiles are designed for older or budget hardware with integrated graphics. Medium and high profiles require dedicated graphics cards to maintain smooth frame rates.

Apply Your Profile

Access the shader settings menu in-game (typically through the shader options screen). Select your profile based on your system:

  • Potato/Low: Older laptops, integrated graphics, or systems struggling to reach 60 FPS
  • Medium: Mid-range dedicated GPUs, target 60+ FPS
  • High: Modern graphics cards, target 100+ FPS with enhanced effects

Test and Adjust

Load into a world and observe frame rates in different environments—caves, forests, and open skies stress the shader differently. If you experience stuttering, drop to a lower profile. If you maintain smooth performance with headroom, try increasing the profile for better visuals.

Fine-Tune Settings

Within your chosen profile, you can often adjust individual features like shadow quality or water detail to find your personal balance between visuals and performance.
