How to Choose and Install RAM Sticks

Pick the right amount

RAM sticks come in 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, 1GB, 2GB, and 4GB RAM stick sizes. A 32-bit Motherboard addresses less memory than a 64-bit Motherboard, so pair large sticks with the 64-bit board to use them fully. Small sticks are fine for a basic boot; larger sticks let the machine run heavier software.

Install into the case

Open the PC case or PC case with glass sidepanel and seat each RAM stick alongside the motherboard, CPU, GPU, and drive. You can install more than one stick — total memory is the sum of the sticks present. If the machine fails to start or behaves poorly, add another stick or swap a small stick for a larger one.

Match RAM to the rest of the build

Keep the RAM compatible with the motherboard and CPU already in the case. A Host CPU divided by 2, divided by 4, or divided by 6 works with the RAM you install, but the 64-bit Motherboard is the better host for 2GB RAM stick and 4GB RAM stick modules. Remove a stick by taking it out of the case and replacing it with the size you want.
