Play Multiplayer With Friends on Different Game Versions

Coordinate Your Versions

For Via Version Plugin to work, at least one player must be on a newer version than the server. Decide as a group which version your server will run—ideally a stable, older version that lets newer players join.

Setup for Your Group

1. Designate one person to host or rent a server on an older Minecraft version

2. Ensure Via Version Plugin is installed on that server

3. Have all players on newer versions connect normally—the plugin handles translation automatically

4. Players on the same version as the server connect without needing the plugin

Managing Version Differences

Newer players will see their client's interface and features, but the actual server world is limited to the older version's content. Agree on what blocks and items everyone can use to avoid confusion. If someone builds with a newer block, it may appear differently or not at all to players on older clients.

Keep Everyone Informed

Communicate clearly about the server's version and what content is available. This prevents frustration when newer features don't work as expected. If your group eventually updates together, you can move to a newer server version.
