How to Build a Mossy Wall with Hanging Moss and Wall Roots

Preparing the wall surface

Hanging Moss, Tall Hanging Moss and Wall Roots are the Verdure blocks for covering vertical surfaces. Build or find a wall first, then decide how much of it should be overgrown.

Start with Wall Roots at the base of the wall, where soil would collect. Place them in short runs rather than one continuous strip so the growth looks uneven. Above the roots, add Hanging Moss in patches, leaving gaps of bare wall between them.

Layering the growth

Use Tall Hanging Moss as the longest pieces. Hang them from the top edge of the wall or from an overhang so they read as trailing growth. Below them, fill in with shorter Hanging Moss. Keep the tall pieces sparse and the short pieces denser.

Where the wall meets the ground, place Humus, Packed Dirt or Dried Mud so the roots have something to sit on. Add Pebbles, Rock and Slate at the foot of the wall.

If the wall is near trees, mix in Oak Branch and Birch Branch at the base and let Fallen Oak Leaves or Fallen Birch Leaves collect against it. Finish with Clover, Wildflowers and Daisies along the bottom edge to soften the transition from stone to ground.
