Prevent Cave-Ins When Mining Overhead Stone
Check Ceiling Safety First
Before breaking any stone block above your head, equip a Soul Lantern in your off-hand and hold a Pickaxe in your main hand. Look up at the ceiling blocks you want to mine. Cyan particles indicate the block is structurally sound and safe to break. Red particles mean danger—a collapse is likely if you mine that block.
Mine Safely
Only break blocks showing cyan particles. If you see red particles, either:
- Move to a different location and mine from there instead
- Build a structural pillar nearby to reinforce the ceiling (pillars protect blocks within a 12-block range)
- Use a Silk Touch pickaxe to extract the block without triggering a collapse
Why This Matters
Mining stone with two air blocks directly below it creates unstable conditions. The deeper you go—especially below Y=30—the more frequently collapses occur. The Soul Lantern warning system lets you plan your mining route safely and avoid sudden rockfalls that can trap or kill you.
