They let you sleep in the field without placing a bed, which is essential when travelling far from home.

Placing and Sleeping

Place the sleeping bag on the ground like a bed and interact with it to sleep. It sets your spawn point the same way a bed does, so if you die you respawn at the sleeping bag. Use it to skip the night and stop phantom spawns while exploring. Pick it back up when you move on — it is portable, which is the whole point.

Dyeing Sleeping Bags

Sleeping bags can be recolored using the crafting_dye recipe type. Combine a sleeping bag with dye to change its color to match your base or your backpack theme. This means you only ever need one sleeping bag; recolor it whenever you want a different look.

Pairing With Your Backpack

Keep the sleeping bag in your backpack during the day and pull it out at night. Because the backpack holds items across equip and unequip, you never leave your sleeping bag behind. On long expeditions, this is the difference between a safe respawn point and walking back from world spawn.
