How to Install and Use Functional Upgrades

Upgrade Slots

Open your equipped backpack to see its upgrade slots. Each functional upgrade occupies a slot and changes what the backpack can do. You can mix and match upgrades, so decide which conveniences matter most for your playstyle.

Crafting and Storage Upgrades

Crafting Upgrade adds a 3x3 crafting grid inside the backpack so you can craft without a table. Tanks Upgrade and Backpack Tank handle fluid storage — install the tank and use the Hose Nozzle to fill or drain it. These are the upgrades to install first if you spend long stretches away from base.

Automation and Utility Upgrades

Pickup Upgrade automatically collects nearby drops into the backpack. Magnet Upgrade pulls items toward you from a distance. Void Upgrade deletes unwanted items so your storage does not clog. Refill Upgrade restocks your held stack from backpack contents. Feeding Upgrade feeds you automatically when hungry. Lantern Upgrade provides light. Jukebox Upgrade plays music discs from the backpack. Each one is crafted and then dropped into an upgrade slot.

Smelting Upgrades

Furnace Upgrade, Smoker Upgrade, and Blast Furnace Upgrade turn the backpack into a portable cooking and smelting station. Furnace Upgrade handles general smelting, Smoker Upgrade cooks food faster, and Blast Furnace Upgrade speeds up ore and metal processing. Install the one that matches the job you do most.

Swapping Upgrades

Upgrades can be removed and reused. If you no longer need a Pickup Upgrade, pull it out and slot in something else. Keep spare upgrades in a chest at base and reconfigure the backpack before each trip.
