How to Craft and Equip a Traveler's Backpack

Crafting the Backpack

Craft a Standard Traveler's Backpack using the travelersbackpack:backpack_shaped recipe. The Traveler's Backpack is the base item you build everything else from. Once crafted, it appears in your inventory as an equippable item.

Equipping and Removing

To equip the backpack, hold it and use it the same way you would put on a chestplate — it occupies a back slot rather than your chest slot, so your armor stays on. To take it off, open your inventory and move the backpack out of its slot, or use the equip key again while it is selected. The backpack keeps its contents when removed, so you can swap between a Standard Traveler's Backpack and a themed one without losing items.

Opening the Inventory

With the backpack equipped, press the backpack key (default is usually B, but check your controls) to open its storage grid. Items placed inside stay there when you unequip it. The backpack also has a tank slot and upgrade slots visible in this interface — those are where Backpack Tank, Tanks Upgrade, and the various upgrade items go.

First Upgrades to Aim For

Drop a Crafting Upgrade into an upgrade slot to get a 3x3 crafting grid inside the backpack. Add a Furnace Upgrade, Smoker Upgrade, or Blast Furnace Upgrade for on-the-go smelting. A Pickup Upgrade automatically collects drops, and a Magnet Upgrade pulls items toward you. These are the fastest quality-of-life wins after you craft your first backpack.
