Bone Gear Basics

Bone gear is your first step up from wooden tools. Craft Bone Sword, Bone Pickaxe, Bone Axe, Bone Shovel, and Bone Hoe using bone-based materials. Bone Helmet, Bone Chestplate, Bone Leggings, and Bone Boots round out a full set of early armor. All of these are straightforward crafting recipes, so gather bones from skeletons and start crafting as soon as you have a crafting table.

Compressing Bone for Storage

Once you have spare bones, craft a Compressed Bone Block. This compresses bone into a single block for compact storage and is useful when you are stockpiling for larger builds or for recipes that call for the compressed form. Keep a stack of Compressed Bone Block in a chest near your crafting area so you do not have to run back to a mob farm every time you need bone.

When to Move On

Bone gear is cheap and disposable. Use it while you gather the materials for Emerald or Diamond gear. Do not enchant bone tools heavily; save your levels for the Emerald Pickaxe, Emerald Sword, Emerald Axe, Emerald Shovel, and Emerald Hoe, or the Diamond equivalents. Bone armor is fine for early cave exploration but swap to Emerald Boots, Emerald Chestplate, Emerald Helmet, and Emerald Leggings once you have emeralds to spare.
