How to Purify Water with a Canteen and Charcoal Filter

Fill a Canteen by using it on a water source to get a Filled Canteen. Drinking straight from a Filled Canteen is not the same as drinking purified water — you need to run it through a Charcoal Filter. Combine the Filled Canteen with a Charcoal Filter in a crafting grid to produce clean drinking water. The mod uses a dedicated survive:crafting_shapeless_with_purified_water recipe type for several of its water conversions, so keep a Purified Water Bucket on hand as the base fluid for anything that needs purified water rather than raw water.

Scaling Up

For long trips, upgrade to a Netherite Canteen. Fill it to get a Filled Netherite Canteen, which holds more and survives more refills than the basic Canteen. Carry spare Charcoal Filters so you can re-filter on the move instead of returning to base. If you are also managing thirst through food, Sugar Water Bottle is a separate drinkable item you can craft and stash alongside your canteen. Keep a Purified Water Bucket in a chest near your crafting area so you never have to make a second trip to a water source when a recipe calls for purified water specifically.
