The Tier Chain

The Staff of Building items form a clear progression: Wooden Staff of Building, Stone Staff of Building, Iron Staff of Building, Golden Staff of Building, Diamond Staff of Building, and finally Netherite Staff of Building. Each of the first five is made with a shaped crafting recipe. The Netherite Staff of Building is the exception, made with a smithing recipe instead.

How to Move Up

Craft the Wooden Staff of Building first. Use it as your starting tool, then craft the Stone Staff of Building, followed by the Iron Staff of Building, the Golden Staff of Building, and the Diamond Staff of Building, each through its shaped recipe. When you reach the Diamond Staff of Building, switch to a smithing table to produce the Netherite Staff of Building. Do not skip tiers, since each shaped recipe expects the previous staff or its tier materials.

Where the Infinite Staff Fits

The Infinite Staff of Building sits outside the normal tier chain. It is a distinct item in the mod, not a smithing upgrade from the Netherite Staff of Building. Treat it as a separate goal: finish the Netherite Staff of Building so you have the strongest standard staff, then pursue the Infinite Staff of Building on its own. With all seven staff items available, you can pick the tier that matches the materials you have and upgrade from there.
