Choosing the Right Staff of Building Tier

Matching the Staff to Your Materials

Each staff tier is gated by the material used in its crafting_shaped recipe. If you can craft the tool or armor of that material, you can craft the matching staff:

• Wooden Staff of Building — available immediately from planks.
• Stone Staff of Building — available once you have cobblestone.
• Iron Staff of Building — available once you have iron ingots.
• Golden Staff of Building — available once you have gold ingots.
• Diamond Staff of Building — available once you have diamonds.

There is no reason to skip straight to a higher tier if you lack the materials. Craft the highest staff your current resources allow, then replace it when you gather better materials.

Planning the Netherite Step

The Netherite Staff of Building is the final tier and the only one made with a smithing recipe rather than crafting_shaped. To reach it, you must first own a Diamond Staff of Building, then combine it with a netherite ingot at a smithing table.

This means your progression path is: craft a lower-tier staff, upgrade through the crafting_shaped tiers as materials arrive, craft the Diamond Staff of Building, then perform the smithing upgrade. Keep the diamond staff until you are ready to convert it — the smithing recipe uses it up.
