How to Use OBJ Models for Custom Items and Blocks

Assigning Models to Items

In your mod's item or block definition, reference your loaded OBJ model instead of a standard JSON model. Point to the model using its resource location (e.g., yourmodid:models/customsword). The Special Model Loader Mod will render the OBJ geometry when the item appears in the world or inventory.

Handling Model Display Properties

OBJ models load with default positioning and scale. If your model appears too large, small, or rotated incorrectly, adjust the model's origin and scale in your 3D editor before exporting. Ensure the model is centered at coordinates (0, 0, 0) for proper in-game placement.

Testing in Different Contexts

Spawn your item and verify it displays correctly:

  • In player inventory
  • When held in hand
  • On the ground
  • On item frames or armor stands

If positioning differs across contexts, you may need to create separate model variants or adjust your OBJ's base orientation. The mod applies the same model data universally, so consistency depends on proper export settings.
