How to Apply Textures to Your OBJ Models

Understanding OBJ Texture References

OBJ models reference textures through MTL (Material) files. When you export your model from a 3D editor, ensure the accompanying MTL file is generated and includes material definitions with texture paths.

Setting Up Texture Files

Place your texture images (PNG format recommended) in assets/yourmodid/textures/models/. Update the MTL file to reference these textures with correct relative paths. The Special Model Loader Mod reads MTL definitions and applies textures during rendering.

Verifying Texture Application

Load your model in-game and check that colors and details appear correctly. If textures don't show:

  • Confirm MTL file is in the same directory as your OBJ
  • Verify texture file paths in the MTL match actual file locations
  • Ensure texture images are valid PNG files

The mod automatically maps UV coordinates from your OBJ to textures defined in the MTL file. No additional texture binding code is required.
