Optimize Shadows for Better Performance

Open Shader Configuration

Access the shader settings menu and navigate to the Shadows or Lighting section.

Adjust Shadow Settings

Find these key options:

  • Shadow Distance: Determines how far from your character shadows are rendered. Reducing this significantly boosts framerates.
  • Shadow Softness: Controls the blur and edge quality of shadows. Lower softness reduces GPU load.
  • Shadow Resolution: Some packs allow adjusting the detail level. Lower resolution = faster rendering.

Balance Quality and Speed

If you're experiencing frame drops, reduce shadow distance first—this has the biggest performance impact. Shadows under trees and buildings will render closer to you, but distant terrain shadows will disappear. If that's acceptable, you've gained significant performance. Next, lower shadow softness if needed. Test by walking through a forest or near structures and observing framerates with F3 debug screen.

Keep shadow softness moderate; too-low values make shadows look harsh and unnatural. Find the sweet spot where your target framerate holds steady.
