Optimize Shader Performance on Low-End Hardware

Reduce Shader Load

Simple Shadows Shaders is built for older computers, but you can optimize further. Open Shader Options and look for performance-related settings.

Key Optimization Steps

  • Lower shadow map resolution — this is the biggest performance impact. Reducing it will make shadows slightly blockier but dramatically improve frame rate
  • Decrease shadow distance — shadows won't render as far from the player, freeing up processing power
  • Disable optional effects — some versions include toggles for colored lighting intensity; reduce these if needed
  • Reduce render distance in Video Settings to complement shader optimization

Monitor Performance

Check your FPS before and after changes using F3 debug screen. Aim for stable 60 FPS or your monitor's refresh rate.

If you still experience lag, consider temporarily disabling the shader in specific situations (like during intensive building) and re-enabling it when exploring. Simple Shadows Shaders' lightweight design means most adjustments should keep the mod playable on potato hardware without sacrificing the visual benefits entirely.
