Building the Lava Coolant Tank

Lava diving requires a different coolant source than water diving. Craft the Lava Coolant Tank using a shaped recipe; it occupies the chest slot and replaces the standard Air Tank when you enter lava. You cannot substitute the Air Tank for lava protection, so craft the Lava Coolant Tank before attempting any lava dive.

Crafting the Lava Armor Pieces

Craft the Lava Diving Helmet, Lava Diving Pants, and Lava Flippers as shaped recipes. Each mirrors its water-diving counterpart but is built from lava-resistant materials. The Lava Diving Helmet uses a Diving Helmet Core in its recipe, so keep a spare Core on hand if you are upgrading from the basic set. For visibility in lava, craft the Lava Diving Helmet (Headlamp) by combining the Lava Diving Helmet with a light source in a shapeless recipe.

Equipping the Full Lava Set

Wear Lava Diving Helmet (Headlamp) or the plain Lava Diving Helmet on your head, Lava Coolant Tank on your chest, Lava Diving Pants on your legs, and Lava Flippers on your feet. Mixing water-diving pieces with lava-diving pieces will not protect you in lava, so equip the complete lava set before stepping into a lava lake. The Lava Coolant Tank is the critical piece; without it the rest of the set provides no lava protection.
