How to Craft and Use the Mortar and Pestle

Building the Mortar

Craft a Mortar, then craft a Pestle. Both are required before any grinding can happen. The Mortar is a block you place in the world; the Pestle is the tool you use on it.

Place the Mortar down like any block. Hold the Pestle and use it on the Mortar to open its grinding interface.

What You Grind

The Mortar converts raw plant materials into powders and pastes used everywhere else in progression. Feed it the ingredients you have gathered and the Pestle does the work.

Key outputs you will need early:

• Growth Powder — the base material for pushing plants and standing stones forward.
• Spell Powder — consumed by casting and runic crafting.
• Mutating Powder — used to change one thing into another.

Gather the raw ingredients first: Oak Bark, Birch Bark, Spruce Bark, Jungle Bark, Acacia Bark, Dark Oak Bark, Cherry Bark, Mangrove Bark, and Pale Oak Bark are all obtained with the Bark Knife. Berries such as Blackcurrant, Redcurrant, Whitecurrant, and Elderberry come from bushes and are also grindable.

Practical Order

1. Craft the Bark Knife.

2. Strip bark from logs to stockpile bark types.

3. Craft the Mortar and Pestle.

4. Grind bark and berries into Growth Powder, Spell Powder, and Mutating Powder.

Keep a steady stock of each powder. Nearly every later step — standing stones, the Imbuer, the Casting Altar — consumes one of them.
