How to Equip, Swap, and Replace Wolf Armor

Equipping Armor on a Wolf

All six armor types — Leather, Copper, Iron, Golden, Diamond, and Netherite Wolf Armor — are equipped the same way. Tame a wolf first with bones. Then hold the armor item and use it on the wolf. The wolf wears the armor and gains its protection.

Swapping Between Tiers

You can change a wolf's armor at any time. Use a different armor piece on the wolf and it replaces the current one. This lets you downgrade a wolf to Leather Wolf Armor for safe travel and upgrade it to Diamond or Netherite before a fight.

Practical Progression

A sensible order:

1. Craft Leather Wolf Armor early — cheap and disposable.

2. Move to Copper or Iron Wolf Armor once you have the metals.

3. Use Golden Wolf Armor if gold is plentiful for you.

4. Craft Diamond Wolf Armor for combat wolves.

5. Smith Diamond into Netherite Wolf Armor for your best wolf.

Recovering Armor

If a wolf dies, its armor is lost with it. Keep spare armor pieces in a chest near where you keep your wolves so you can re-equip a replacement quickly. Because Leather and Copper tiers are cheap, stock several of those for everyday use and reserve Diamond and Netherite for wolves you actively fight with.
