Make Caves and Underground Spaces Feel Naturally Lit
How Global Illumination Affects Underground Areas
Caves benefit dramatically from realistic light bouncing. Sunlight entering from above spreads deeper into caverns, and torchlight reflects off stone walls to illuminate surrounding areas more naturally than vanilla lighting.
Creating Better Underground Lighting
1. Place torches strategically—light now bounces off nearby blocks, so fewer torches are needed
2. Use colored blocks (glowstone, lanterns, or glow berries) to tint reflected light
3. Position light sources on walls and ceilings, not just the floor—light bounces more visibly
4. Avoid over-lighting; the shader's ambient light means you need less artificial illumination
5. Test how different block materials reflect light—stone, dirt, and ore each behave differently
Design Tips
The global illumination makes caves feel less like dark boxes and more like real spaces. Experiment with light placement to create mood—warm torchlight mixing with cool ambient shadows creates depth. Underground bases now feel livable without being flooded with light sources.
