What Filter Frames Do

Filter Frames are the replaceable filtering core of every respirator. There are three tiers: Iron Filter Frame, Golden Filter Frame, and Diamond Filter Frame. Each frame is also a placeable block, so you can set it down in the world as a physical object rather than only carrying it as an item. The tier of the frame determines which respirator it belongs to: an Iron Filter Frame pairs with an Iron Respirator, a Golden Filter Frame with a Golden Respirator, and a Diamond Filter Frame with a Diamond Respirator.

Replacing a Spent Frame

When your respirator stops cleaning the air, the frame inside it is used up. Craft a new frame of the same tier, then combine it with the respirator in a shaped crafting recipe to refresh the device. Match the tier exactly: an Iron Filter Frame will not restore a Golden Respirator or a Diamond Respirator. Because frames are blocks, you can also place them down as markers or storage while you gather the matching Vacuum Bag and Vacuum Tube for the next craft. Carry a small stock of the frame tier that matches your current respirator so a filter never runs dry mid-journey. Use the Aerometer to confirm the air is clean again after you swap the frame in.
