Using Selective Red to Spot Mobs and Hazards in the Dark

Understanding Selective Red

This shader feature makes red-tinted objects and mobs stand out dramatically against dark backgrounds. Hostile mobs like Creepers, Spiders, and Endermen have reddish highlights that pop through fog and darkness, giving you a survival advantage while maintaining creepy atmosphere.

Spotting Threats Effectively

When exploring at night or in caves:

  • Watch for red glints in the fog—these indicate nearby mobs before they're fully visible
  • Use the effect to navigate by moving toward or away from red highlights
  • Combine with sound cues—the red alert works best alongside mob sounds to confirm danger

Red blocks like Redstone, Nether brick, and Crimson wood will also glow slightly, which can help you navigate familiar areas.

Adjusting Sensitivity

If selective red is too aggressive or too subtle, check your shader settings for a "red intensity" or "threat highlight" slider. Increase it if you're missing mobs; decrease it if the effect feels artificial and breaks immersion. The goal is having just enough warning to react without feeling like you have supernatural vision.
