Fix Color Banding or Posterization Issues

Understand Color Banding in Cartoon Shaders

Old Doggo Shaders' bright, simplified lighting can sometimes create visible color bands—flat areas where gradients should be smooth. This is especially noticeable in skies and large flat surfaces. This is a known characteristic of the cartoon aesthetic rather than a bug.

Increase Dithering or Noise

Check shader options for dithering, noise, or smoothing settings. Enabling subtle noise patterns breaks up flat colors and makes gradients appear more natural while preserving the cartoon look.

Adjust Lighting Smoothness

If available, look for shadow smoothing or light transition settings. Increasing smoothness reduces harsh color boundaries between lit and shadowed areas, creating a more polished cartoon appearance.

Accept Stylistic Limitations

The simplified lighting model is intentional—it keeps performance high on weak hardware. Some color banding is part of the aesthetic. If it bothers you, try increasing render distance or exploring different biomes where the effect is less noticeable. The trade-off between visual simplicity and performance is by design.
