Optimize Shadows for Low-End Performance
Lower Shadow Resolution
Reduce shadow map resolution in shader options. This is the primary performance setting—lower resolution means faster shadow calculation with minimal visual loss on potato setups. Start with the lowest setting and increase only if shadows look too pixelated.
Reduce Shadow Distance
Decreasing how far shadows render from the player significantly improves frame rate. Shadows will only appear close to you, but nearby blocks still get proper depth. This is ideal for low-end systems.
Disable Advanced Features
If available, turn off shadow filtering or smoothing options. These enhance shadow edges but cost performance. On potato computers, crisp but slightly jagged shadows are better than stuttering gameplay.
Monitor Frame Rate
Use F3 debug screen to watch your FPS while adjusting settings. Make one change at a time and observe the impact. Stop optimizing once you reach your target frame rate.
Balance Visuals and Performance
The goal is maintaining smooth gameplay while keeping shadows visible. Even minimal shadows add depth without requiring high-end hardware. Test in your main world to ensure settings work during actual play, not just in menus.
