Let Players Display Their Held Item in Chat Messages
Enable the Item Placeholder Feature
The [ITEM] tag lets players show the tool or weapon they're currently holding as a hoverable element in chat.
Steps:
1. Ensure players have the lpcf.itemplaceholder permission node. Assign it to groups or individual players in LuckPerms.
2. A player holds any item in their main hand (sword, pickaxe, food, etc.).
3. The player types a chat message and includes [ITEM] anywhere in the text—for example: "Check out my new pickaxe [ITEM]!"
4. When the message is sent, other players see the item name appear where [ITEM] was placed. Hovering over it shows the item's full details (enchantments, durability, etc.).
Troubleshooting
If [ITEM] appears as plain text instead of an item:
- Verify the player has
lpcf.itemplaceholderpermission. - Confirm they are holding an item in their main hand, not the offhand.
- Run
/lpcf reloadto refresh permissions.
The item display respects your chat format colors, so it integrates seamlessly with rank-based styling.
