How to Get Started with Malum: First Tools and Materials

Gather the Basics

Begin by collecting Runewood logs from Runewood trees. Convert them into Runewood Planks at a crafting table, then craft a Crude Scythe. The Crude Scythe is your first harvesting tool and is required to gather souls and other Malum resources from the world.

Use the Crude Scythe to cut grass, leaves, and mobs. This produces Arcane Charcoal Fragments, Coal Fragments, and Charcoal Fragments depending on what you harvest. Combine fragments into full Arcane Charcoal or use them directly in recipes.

Set Up a Work Area

Place a Runewood Item Stand and a Runewood Item Pedestal near your crafting area. These blocks hold items for display and are used in several Malum recipes that require items to be placed in the world rather than in a grid.

Craft an Encyclopedia Arcana as soon as you can. It is your in-game reference for recipes and progression and should be kept in your inventory.

Smelt Raw Soulstone in a furnace to obtain Processed Soulstone. Combine Processed Soulstone with other materials to craft Soul Stained Steel, which is used in advanced tools and blocks.

Mine Tainted Rock and Twisted Rock underground. These stones can be cut into Polished Tainted Rock, Polished Twisted Rock, Cut Tainted Rock, and Cut Twisted Rock at a stonecutter, giving you building blocks for a base.
