Troubleshoot Uneven or Flickering Lighting

Common Lighting Issues

Occasionally, shadows may flicker, or lighting transitions between blocks may look unnatural. These issues usually stem from shader settings conflicting with your hardware or world settings.

Check Shadow Stability

Open shader options (Shift + O) and verify:

  • Shadow Jitter: If available, ensure this is enabled. It smooths out shadow edges and reduces flickering.
  • Shadow Distance: Very high values can cause instability on low-end PCs. Try reducing it to a moderate range.
  • Update Frequency: Some shaders let you control how often shadows recalculate. A slower update rate can reduce flicker but may cause shadows to lag behind moving objects.

Adjust Ambient Occlusion

If corners and crevices look overly dark or spotty, reduce ambient occlusion strength. This effect can sometimes create harsh transitions on certain block types.

Test in Different Conditions

Flickering often appears worst near water, in caves, or during sunrise/sunset. Visit these areas after each adjustment to confirm the issue is resolved. If problems persist, try resetting shader settings to default and adjusting only one value at a time.
